He spooked and ducked into the long grass before shaking it off and continuing on his way (in a different direction). I was mortified. Asaria found two more male lions laying together a short distance from the path. I remained seated with my hands and arms inside the vehicle. There was a group of young men that came to perform a combination of singing, dancing and acrobatics. The acro-tricks were a precursor to some serious gymnastics that we were going to see on the beaches (and streets) of Zanzibar. Asaria brought us to this massive plain that felt very much like something out of Jurassic Park. As we drove through, we were surrounded by creatures - elephants, zebra, wildebeest, fox. Eventually we stopped and I was thrilled to learn we were allowed to get out of the vehicle! Asaria had brought us to the border of Kenya and Tanzania where we could stretch our legs and to Lindsay’s delight, take many photos and videos of ourselves. We met a man from Montreal who had also stopped there; he was on a safari holiday in Kenya and was stepping over the border to Tanzania! We then continued our game drive throughout the afternoon and returned to camp as a massive storm was rolling in. We had stopped to watch her when suddenly, another little head popped up - she had a cub with her! He was only about one month old and was quite possibly the sweetest little baby I’d ever seen. We weren’t able to get any closer to see him better because of the game drive rules in National Parks. They differ from reserves in that your guide must stay on the marked paths during your game drive, while in a reserve there is more flexibility and you are able to take the vehicles off the road. Unique to this lodge, we also had a tutorial on operating a radio as we had to use one to connect with the main lodge when we needed an escort to retrieve us. After changing into something a bit warmer, we walked back to the main lodge to sit by the fire. I was sending up prayers to David Attenborough that he may shine down some blessings upon us that day. We were escorted to the lodge to meet Asaria while it was still dark. After collecting our breakfast we headed out to the vehicle. By this time, the sky was lit up with stunning shades of purple! It was a beautiful (slightly chilly) drive to the river that morning as the sun came up. There are a few specific sites where animals attempt their crossings. This can change over the years though, as apparently after some flooding in 2018 and 2020, the Mara River slightly changed its course which created new bends in the river, causing a shift in the crossing points used by the animals. We were on a tight schedule. Fresh purchases in hand we continued our own migration, chatting with Asaria about a plethora of topics. Whether it was asking about things we were seeing along the way, or asking about Asaria’s career as a guide, we were chatty. Eventually we left the smooth ride of the paved roads and found ourselves flying down a dirt “road” at astonishing speeds. We no longer saw shops or people running errands or communities with children playing. It was just rocks and dust. So much dust. Crouching down for a drink (from a pond that absolutely did not look sanitary) her eyes were alert and constantly scanning her surroundings in case of any approaching lions. I couldn’t decide if that was an interaction I would want to see because it would be an unusual sighting, or if I absolutely did not want to see that because it would scar me emotionally for the rest of time. Strange as it may sound, hyenas became one of my favourite sightings during this adventure. They are weirdly adorable. There are some interesting stories surrounding hyena, although they differ wildly depending on where you are. For example, West African folklore generally has hyenas symbolizing negative traits like immorality or dirty habits. In East African mythology, the hyena is portrayed as the first animal to bring the sun to warm the earth. In Tanzania, there is a belief among some that witches use spotted hyenas as mounts (definitely my favourite story). Our one note on this section was “we don’t have any interest in birds.” We felt this was important to share because Tanzania is home to nearly 1200 birds which makes it a popular destination for bird people. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/662bc2faec49c9372832dead/21b71ea7-8af0-4119-854d-e1847d81b310/A43AFAC6-EA1C-46FF-A1F5-524433D4B23C_1_105_c.jpg Blog - The fastest safari on earth Upon check-in we were handed a cool cloth to wipe the dust from our faces and a fresh fruit juice while they gave us the safety rundown/rules/room key. With the safety brief done, we went out to the deck to finish our juice and take in the view. Let me tell you, the views were breathtaking. Below the deck was an infinity pool, which at that moment overlooked a handful of zebras grazing nearby. After enjoying our fruit juice and taking in the views of the savannah, we were escorted to our “tent.” The lodge and its 25 guest rooms are perched on a hillside with sweeping views over the plains. The tents are on wood platforms, with a private balcony and outdoor shower overlooking the morning activity on the plains below. Alternatively, if you prefer a nighttime shower, you can do so under the thousands of stars visible at night. The beds were large and comfortable, and should you want to skip the outdoor shower, there was a large tub at the window. When we found them a few second later, they were merely feet from the vehicle. They were all still young (spotting on their legs) but there were four of them; a male and female next to us, and two more females up in a tree 20 feet ahead. We pulled up closer to the tree just in time for a family of elephants to accidentally come across the lions. They had a young calf, so it became very loud and very tense very quickly. It seated six people in the back, plus Azaria and our cooler up front. Lindsay and I had opted for a private booking, so the two of us had so much space for activities in the back (activities meaning standing on whatever seat offered the best view at any given time). Before departure, we met briefly with a woman who reviewed our itinerary - a massive relief because we had completely forgotten where we were going and what we were doing. She seemed apprehensive when she told us that Azaria “loved to talk,” but honestly I could not have been more thrilled/relieved because I LOVE to ask questions. A match made in heaven. We hopped into our rover and with an “okay girls?” (the first of many), we drove off. The first bit of the drive was uneventful overall, although driving out of Arusha was really fascinating. On our morning driving away from Simba Lodge, he needed us to step in. I’ve never felt more disappointed about my inability to drive standard than I did in that moment. Lindsay said yes obviously, and although Azaria’s voice reached an octave I hadn’t heard before, she did well! She drove us through the bush for a good 20 minutes, at one point passing another safari vehicle where the tourists inside were shocked to see our adjusted seating plan. Once we got back into the park and Azaria was back behind the wheel, it wasn’t long before we came across an elephant snacking right on the side of the road. We observed him from a few feet away, until he flared out his ears and gave us a little mock charge. Azaria had to rev the engine a bit to get him to back off. He was so close, I felt I could nearly reach out to touch him.
